A number of performers have inquired about whether Prophetic Pictures, the producer of a stereoscopic 3D feature film that is advertising SAG rates and holding an upcoming open casting call, has become signatory to a SAG agreement.  As of the sending of this message, Prophetic Pictures has not yet executed the required basic minimum agreement with SAG.

HB 331 was introduced this past week into the New Mexico House of Representatives. This so-called "right-to-work" legislation has been scheduled for its first committee hearing before the House Labor and Human Resources Committee.

This bill is designed to weaken unions. The benefits you and your fellow members have fought for is threatened by this action. If passed, the end result will be less Screen Actors Guild jobs for SAG members.

Senator John Arthur Smith, the Chair of both the Finance & Revenue Stabilization and Tax Policy Committees, introduced SB 235 yesterday. The bill calls for a $2 million cap per project on the film incentive rebates. This would apply to all future TV/Theatrical productions shooting in the state. If passed, this would clearly injure the NM film industry.

Helping with Film & Media Day is now more important than ever. It looks like this bill will be heard on Friday, February 5 at 1:30 p.m. and we’ll be rallying the troops prior to the reading of the bill.

The next two weeks are crucial in our campaign for passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. In this time it’s important that we have as much contact with Senator Bingaman as possible and let him hear from the people of New Mexico. He’s getting plenty of phone calls from the other side. The clamor he hears during the important discussions going on needs to be from us, not from our opposition.

It’s turning out to be quite an important year for Screen Actors Guild members on the legislative front. The 2009 regular session at the Roundhouse – which finished on March 21 – saw Right-to-Work-for-Less legislation, as well as a bill to kill the New Mexico film incentive program. Due to our collective efforts, both bills have been tabled.
